Boat Trailers are different from other types of trailers and RVs because they get immersed in water (often salt water) and that accelerates corrosion or rust. A definition of corrosion is “development of metal oxides on the surface of a metal part”. With steel as the metal, iron oxides are the compounds that form rust (Fe2O3/FeOOH). Rust starts on the surface but if not corrected, will corrode the part until it fails. If this happens, the part will need to be replaced. Finding parts for specific brands of boat trailer is not easy because many manufacturers have closed their operations years ago.
The traditional method to help retard corrosion in boat trailer components is to galvanize using hot dip zinc. Zinc electro-plating will help but due to the plating porosity, corrosion will gradually erode the part. Aluminum is also frequently used as a material.
Eastern Marine specializes in replacement parts for boat trailers. Just about any part you need is available including axles, leaf springs, brakes, winch post parts, etc. If you have a Load Rite trailer; then select LOADRITE Factory Trailer Parts. If you have an EZ Loader trailer, select EZ-LOADER Factory Trailer Parts .
It a few weeks we will be offering a new product line that will be of interest to owners of older boat trailers… the galvanized square tube universal axle. These 2” x 2” axles will be supplied by Tie Down Engineering and be available in 2000 lb rating (up to 96 inch overall length) with a 1-1/16” straight spindle. The 3500 lb axles will also be available up to 96” overall length with a standard 1-3/8” x 1-1/16” spindle with brake flange. What makes them universal is that the customer will have to drill holes in the tube for the spring seat position exactly as it is on the axle being replaced. This position varies for each trailer manufacturer. We would recommend treating the drilled area with a corrosion preventive product.
This new product will be just the ticket for owners of discontinued trailer brands like Calkins, Cox, Shoreline, Holsclaw, Escort, Long, Dilly, Performance etc. and can be seen at TRAILER PARTS SUPERSTORE

Big Kahoona | posted 05-19-2003 02:32 PM ET (US) Does any one know a good online dealer for Holsclaw Boat Trailer parts? I have a 1969 C-50 in upstate New York which is 14'5' and it’s in fair condition. I would like to refurbish the trailer right down to the colors and the logo stickers on the fenders, too. |

Samars | posted 05-20-2003 08:03 AM ET (US) Big, I have, over the last two or so years have had the same problem as you..I have a 68, Holesclaw trailer..I have done some reworking and repainting..sandblasted and repainted (poorly), and with the coil springs and shock system..it is the best riding trailer I have owned. The hardest part was finding the correct shocks..ended up in the back of an auto parts store pulling shocks with the stock boy and matching shocks till we came up with something close..(collapsed vs. extended). Good luck and take care |
Jay A | posted 05-23-2003 05:02 PM ET (US) Unless you use a Holsclaw trailer in fresh water..they rust BAD! I had one that came with my 13' Whaler new. It lasted 4 years! Three of those years it was only used to launch for the season and take out in the fall. It was so bad I could and did fold it up in small chunks to throw out in the trash! And yes, I washed it with fresh water after every use! They make a good winch though..it's still on the Cox trailer I replaced it with! |
jxs226 | posted 05-23-2003 05:52 PM ET (US) Jay A, I really think the longevity of a trailer largely depends upon matching the trailer's construction material with its intended environment of use, namely regular use in saltwater versus use in freshwater. A painted trailer will rust out quickly if used in saltwater, regardless of freshwater rinsing or manufacturer. Sketch for mac keyboard. The 1979 galvanized Holsclaw trailer beneath my 1964 Sakonnet has seen regular use in saltwater since its purchase and with only routine care it looks as though it were brand new. |
Jay A | posted 05-23-2003 08:42 PM ET (US) jx: Your right on! The Holsclaw trailer I had was not galvanized. It was new in 1970 and made with rectangular tube steel which was painted. It rusted from the inside out and the rust wasn't visable until it broke in half while launching. I found some pieces of wood at the ramp and used that to 'lash' the trailer together just to get it home! I've had the Cox galvinized trailer since 1974 and it still looks and works great! |

PeteB88 | posted 06-18-2007 02:00 AM ET (US) Fantastic trailers and the smoothest riding trailer I have ever used. I have one under my Vintage Grumman Combo II I restored and now listed on Ebay for sale. I used the Holsclaw for my 11.5 for a couple of years and it was fantastic. NOTHING I have ever used is as easy riding for boats as that trailer. I say get to work on it, take a hammer and pound on it to see if steel has integrity or weak spots. I restored the one under the Grumman, pretty easy actually. Good luck. |
ricksford | posted 07-15-2008 01:56 PM ET (US) I have a 1970 Holsclaw C-1700 trailer that I bought new and other than needing wax, is like new. Even the 38 year old tires 'look' good with no checking. I'm considering replacing my 40 year old boat. The new boat will add about 500 pounds and weigh rigged about 2500 pounds. Currently the trailer doesn't strain at all and rides beautifully. I will change the tires to achieve a load capacity of 2960# (both tires), BUT, does anyone have an idea as to what the rated capacity of thi trailer is? I have the original papers but they only say to set the tounge weight for 7% on boats over 1500#. No weight limits. |
Nobleskydiver | posted 03-16-2009 05:41 PM ET (US) I too have a 1966 Boston Whaler 13 footer and it came with a HOLSCLAW trailer, used manyyears ie 30 plus in pacific ocean, never rinsed it, yes it rusted!
